Are pregnancy tests from dollar stores as reliable as more expensive ones from a big retailer?

Abby H asked:

I’ve seen pregnancy tests in dollar stores, and even though they say they’re accurate, I have to wonder. If you look at pregnancy tests at stores like Target or Wal-Mart, they’re more expensive. So are pregnancy tests from dollar stores reliable, or are the bigger stores just ripping us off? Is it better to use a more expensive brand of pregnancy test, or will a dollar store brand give you just as accurate a result?

Thanks guys, this is my first time taking a pregnancy test!

I don’t think it matters – I’ve used both and to be honest the “big names” didn;t detect my pregnancy nearly as well as the cheap-o dollar ones did.

They are the exact same thing- don’t waste your money on brand name tests.

I got a cheap pregnancy test to find out if i’m pregnant, it gave me the correct answer, i think the expensive ones are more accurate but the cheap ones are still good and to give a correct answer

    14 wks pregnant!

I took two pregnancy tests from the dollar store and they were very accurate. I personally think they work better than the expensive name brand ones at wal-mart or target.

    Here, check out this website:

It tells you how early you can test with each type of test, it’s sensitivity, and even goes over some common FAQ. It’s great!

yes! they are great! each time they worked for me, and also told me that I was pregnant before I even thought I was!

Yep! I have used both, just to test each other…the only difference is the application used to put the urine on the applicator. They both work fine.

  10. Lil J says:

it depends on how strong the pregnancy hormone is thats how they detect it

I’ve tried them all with no problems.

My 2nd kid was + on a dollar tree one… 3days after missed period.

I buy pregnacny test strips from amazon now… 5 bucks for 10-15 of them. Easy to use, and just as accurate.
:) I loam the strips out to people who think they need one. So far I’ve had 2 positive friends! I know they work great!

they work just as well, sometimes better b/c the ones from the bigger company gave me negatives and the dollar store one gave me a positive.

It depends which test you use. The everything for $1.00 store sells a test that is literally $1.00, but the dollar general and stores like that have a $1.00 test and a $3.00 test. The $3.00 test is not that great believe it or not, but the $1.00 test is really good. I was able to test at about 3 1/2 weeks pregnant with it and although the positive line was REALLY faint it was still there. Of course you have to remember that HCG levels are different in every woman so although I was able to test that early not all women have enough HCG at that point. If you are testing early it is also REALLY important to test first thing in the morning because that is when HCG levels are at their highest. As far as value is concerned I am every bit as happy with the $1.00 test as I am with the $15.00 test. Good luck with the results!

I have used both and both have worked for me, and the dollar tree ones worked about two weeks before I missed my period, which is rare I know, but I have never gotten a false positive from them.

Pretty much all tests detect the same hormone levels.

    Good luck!! :)
